Why this program?

The Foundations in Community Journalism microcredential invites participants into the practice of journalism as a tool for collective power, resilience, and accountability. Through four interconnected, experiential workshops, students will gain both a grounding in the values of community journalism and practical skills they can immediately apply. Together, we will explore what makes community journalism distinct from legacy models and how it overlaps with community organizing. Students will learn why authentic, trust-based relationships are central to ethical reporting, and they will practice strategies for showing up within communities with transparency, humility, and care. Participants will sharpen their ability to ask strong, open-ended questions鈥攃ultivating curiosity, cultural awareness, and active listening as cornerstones of ethical storytelling. Finally, students will step behind the scenes of the full journalistic process, moving from idea to impact while reflecting on the rights and responsibilities of both journalists and news consumers. By the end of this program, students will leave with a holistic understanding of community journalism: its principles, practices, and potential to create meaningful stories that are accurate, ethical, and rooted in community trust.

What will this program look like?

To successfully complete the pathway and earn the Foundations in Community Journalism badge, participants must:

  • Engage with all four modules by completing required readings, videos, and non-lecture learning resources.
  • Submit one artifact per module (e.g., a short written response, audio/video reflection, or activity worksheet) demonstrating engagement with key concepts:
    • Module 1: Reflection on how community journalism differs from legacy journalism.
    • Module 2: Example of a relationship-building strategy or community map.
    • Module 3: A set of open-ended, intentional interview questions.
    • Module 4: A brief outline of a story idea following the journalistic process.
  • Participate in at least two cohort-based discussions (online discussion prompts, peer feedback, or synchronous conversations).
  • Complete a final capstone reflection (2鈥3 pages or a short multimedia submission) synthesizing learning across all modules. The capstone must demonstrate:
    • Understanding of the historical roots and purposes of community journalism.
    • Application of relationship-building and ethical accountability strategies.
    • Ability to craft effective, curiosity-driven questions.
    • Familiarity with the journalistic process from idea to public engagement.

Saadeh received her Ph.D. in Sustainability Education from 天美传媒 in 2019. Additionally, Saadeh has a Master of Arts in the Humanities, focusing on justice, activism, and solidarity as well a Master of Science in Resilient and Sustainable Communities, both from 天美传媒. Why this program?

You are fascinated by the human mind. You are equally curious about how the world around us influences human thought, behavior, and interpersonal relationships. You believe  that healthy individuals and groups help contribute to a more just and sustainable world, and vice versa. You therefore want a more holistic approach to psychology than most colleges and universities offer. You believe this integrated program is the best way to become an effective and positive agent for change.

What can you do with this degree?

You can apply your holistic mindset, practical skills, and theoretical knowledge across a variety of career paths including counseling, psychotherapy, community well-being programs, health promotion programs, educational and research institutions, among many others.

Use this degree to participate in one of our accelerated Master鈥檚 degrees: MS in Counseling or MEd in School Counseling.

What will this program look like?

Explore emotional, cognitive, social, cultural, and spiritual aspects of the human mind while also gaining deep insight into how socioeconomic, political, and environmental systems influence individuals and community life. This kind of integration goes beyond mainstream approaches to psychology, which narrowly focus on the individual person. In our program, you will learn to apply critically and ethically informed psychological knowledge to support individual, societal, environmental, and organizational wellbeing. You will also apply scientific thinking to understand and evaluate the quality and value of psychological research, theories, and applications. And you will have opportunities to take classes from different departments and programs, as well as obtain experiences in the field and learn how to prepare and practice for a therapeutic setting.

The BA in Psychology at 天美传媒 emphasizes critical, holistic, and social/environmental justice perspectives to approach the study of individual, societal, and institutional/organizational psychological processes and well-being. These perspectives include centering diverse voices, experiences, and ways of knowing, and understanding the complex interactions between sociocultural and individual factors, as well as the influence of power, privilege, and oppression.

Why this program?

Students drawn to the MS in Environmental Studies and Sustainability degree are passionate about understanding, preserving, and restoring ecological systems, as well as adapting human societies to better reflect our dependence on those systems. They understand that both conservation and regenerative practices are rooted in managing the human impact on these systems. This is especially true as we make the transition to a rapidly warming climate.

What sets this degree apart from others is its distinctive bioregional approach to distance learning. Rooted in field-based education, this approach asks students to apply what they learn in each course to the specific places where they work and live. This emphasis on practical and local applications of knowledge enables students to make sense of their environments through multiple disciplinary frameworks, build connections with professionals working in their own regions, and learn about different ecological systems from classmates located around the US and beyond.

This program also serves students by designing courses to fit around their responsibilities at work and at home. Most instructors serving this program bring hands-on professional experience in their fields, in addition to their academic training, and the learning communities we build in our courses encourage more personal connections than students are likely to find in larger institutions.

What will this program look like?

The core courses in this degree provide students with a foundation for understanding local ecological systems, climate change, environmental attitudes across cultures, applied systems thinking, and essential skills in leadership and communication. Students can then focus more specifically through a variety of concentrations.

  • Our concentration in Conservation Biology prepares students to conduct research and develop policies to protect and restore threatened habitats and populations.
  • Our concentration in Resilience Planning and Climate Solutions prepares students to envision and plan communities, practices, and networks that are more sustainable, just, and regenerative.

While applying what they learn to the places where they live and work, our students acquire knowledge and professional skills that prepare them to make a difference, whether working in agencies and organizations, or continuing their research at the next level.

What can you do with a Master鈥檚 Degree in Environmental Studies?

Graduates of the program will be prepared to serve a variety of agencies at the municipal, county, state, and federal levels, as well as in nonprofit organizations that address issues of conservation and sustainability.

From wildlands conservation and ecological restoration to policy making and community-based education, our graduates are prepared to analyze challenges from a variety of perspectives, and to propose solutions based on careful research, stakeholder engagement, and a solid understanding of relevant policies and opportunities.

Our graduates have gone on to fulfilling careers, such as the positions listed below:

Foundational courses lay the groundwork for understanding regenerative design, while later stages of the program encourage self-directed, local projects that bring living-systems, biophilic, and regenerative design principles to life. An immersive residency either at 天美传媒 or one of our field or partner campuses provides hands-on experience with regenerative design processes, techniques, and applications, deepening your practical understanding in a real-world context.

What will this program look like?

Students will engage with the unprecedented environmental and social challenges that our planet faces today, requiring a new and more nuanced form of design thinking. While historically, design efforts have focused more on human-centered solutions, regenerative design considers our complex and co-dependent ecosystems as an emergent whole. Questions that will be explored in this program include:

  • How do we design our habitats, products, and systems to authentically engage with a more-than-human world?
  • How can regenerative design restore ecosystems and empower local communities while preserving cultural identity?
  • What indigenous knowledge and ways of life can inform our decision-making and design proposals?
  • How can we make multi-species thinking central to human systems design?

Students in this limited-residency MA in Regenerative Design program will consider these and other challenges through the lenses of social justice, emerging technologies, education, and design frameworks while developing acute problem-solving skills that will help address challenges created by our dependence on outdated design principles and practices, and innovate new possibilities.

Gain professional competencies

This program is designed to cultivate professional expertise in regenerative design by building core competencies in both technical skills and collaborative practices. Through iterative design processes and exploration of the human-nature interface, students will develop innovative solutions that draw from a wide range of perspectives, empowering them to make meaningful contributions to the field of regenerative design.

This program places a strong emphasis on professional training, equipping students with the practical skills and tools needed to drive meaningful change. Through hands-on projects, collaborative workshops, and exposure to leading design methodologies, students will gain proficiency in critical areas like systems thinking, ecological assessment, as well as community- and ecologically-engaged design. By working alongside industry professionals and community partners, students will develop expertise in regenerative design techniques that address real-world environmental and social issues.

Work with global partners

The program’s focus on skill development ensures that graduates are prepared not only to innovate in their field but to lead transformative initiatives in sustainability, ecosystem restoration, and culturally responsive design. Some partners you might have the chance to work with include:
